Producing the Colorado edition between 1996 and 2003, Karmann managed to craft a line that seamlessly followed the design of the predecessors in the same series. Today, the WIKING prototype is considered a modern classic when, back then, it aroused attention as a newcomer, riding on the tailcoats of the camper van boom. Foregoing the classic superstructure, Karmann treated the VW T4 chassis of the Colorado edition to a bona fide body. The alcove bed niche above the driver's cab along with the roof and the rear were made of plastic parts, which allowed for implementing a fluent design language. Karmann had been making camper vans since 1977, after Wilhelm Karmann himself had discovered the prototype for his own first camper van in South Africa. T2 camper vans blazed the trail and were later accompanied by caravans for a while. In 2000, the Karmann-Mobil business unit was sold to Eura Mobil.
