Loud colours and Flower Power feeling - no vehicle embodied this more than the VW Beetle of the last generation. And yet: The 1303 was also the most progressive of the Beetle family when it was introduced in 1972, as it boasted such signature features as a bulging windscreen and the large three-chamber tail lights that had doubled in size. The shiny “elephant feet”, as the reversing lights were called by Beetle enthusiasts and deriders alike, marked the appearance of the rear with conspicuous dominance. The 1.3 litre engine generated a respectable output of 44 hp. WIKING’s prototype was produced between 1972 and 1974 before Wolfsburg pulled the plug on July 1, ending the era of Beetle manufacturing that began in 1945.
