The French demonstrated their sense of style – which was encapsulated in the smart look of the Parisienne model version. This dashing R4 with its stylish, contrasting flanks was to become the manifestation of a design language that was geared towards a new target group. In 1963, the powers that be at Renault decided it was time to finally place more women behind the wheel of the R4 – which brought them to allow potential female customers to test drive the Haute Couture model with its special pattern for 48 hours. These Haute Couture cars were eventually turned into the Parisienne models. This vehicle in particular speaks volumes about the French car makers’ automotive philosophy. The approach pursued in Germany was decidedly more pragmatic: the “R4” was considered one of the most popular agile and affordable foreign-made small vehicles - a typical family car. Starting from humble beginnings at the time it was produced - with a small, rather inconspicuous radiator grill, the French compact car with its handy tailgate quickly turned into a true alternative to the likes of the VW Beetle, i.e. a no-frills vehicle for daily use and everyday driving.
