May somewhat dull, but giving off an air of high automotive status: Released by the Rüsselsheim auto makers as their limousine of the seventies in time for the 1972 Olympics, it epitomised a modern lifestyle and encapsulated the spirit of the time with its light blue paintwork. Owners who used to drive a Kadett had now conquered Opel’s automotive universe. Finally a “grand” limousine with plenty of room! Rolling off the line between August of 1971 and the company’s summer holidays in 1977, the Opel Rekord D became a best-seller with over a million units sold! Designer Chuck Jordan made a drawing of the Rekord D, perfectly capturing the mood of the time as well as the middle class’s attitude towards life. This attitude was the driving force behind the Rekord’s record sales. Until July of 1977, a total of 1,128,196 units were produced.
