As is so often the case at WIKING, the model is brimming with the history of its original. Although the VW K70 came onto the market with this type designation in 1970, it was originally intended to be the NSU K70. The “K” was the company’s designation for “Kolbenmotor” (piston engine), and the NSU engineers, who had been designing the mid-range car since 1965, were supposed to have been working towards the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1969. The K70 was specifically intended to fill a gap in the NSU range between the popular Prinz and the Ro 80 with its Wankel engine. This is why the designation K70 would have fitted seamlessly into the Neckarsulm nomenclature. However, things turned out differently, and the Wolfsburg car manufacturer reached out to NSU and without further ado printed its brand logo on the K70. It was only a year later, in the autumn of 1970, that the four-door, now crowned the VW K70, came onto the market. However, those at Wolfsburg paid their new subsidiary, Audi NSU Auto-Union Ag, 33 Mark per vehicle for their newly found darling as compensation for the development costs and investments in the production facilities. According to the model making concept, the WIKING miniature, the original of which was designed by NSU design chief Claus Luthe, heralded in a new VW decade. The fact that the actual NSU K70 should ultimately become a powerful gas guzzler under the VW roof was also due to the poor drag coefficient of 0.52 – which coming hot on the heels of the oil crisis, helped to seal its fate. At the time, WIKING introduced the model with a glued-on radiator grille, giving it the appearance of the Neckarsulm prototypes.
