The vehicles used by the fire service in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia have a completely individual corporate design which is guaranteed to make their presence felt. All the vehicles are supplied finished in white and then sheets of daylight luminous film are applied to them. This gives the vehicles in Düsseldorf a uniform appearance made striking by the design in a combination of white and luminous red, as reproduced for the WIKING model which has the latest Metz turntable ladder and a Mercedes Benz Econic chassis. The construction concept of the original is based on a new platform floor area with equipment boxes suspended underneath which optimises the available space provided by the vehicle as effectively as possible. The tried and tested horizontal and vertical support concept already known to Metz was also used for the new L32. A platform on which a generator or additional equipment can be kept is provided on the right-hand side of the rotating tower. The newly designed main operating position was ergonomically designed with the operator in mind – even in 1:87 moving components have been used for this operating position. Anyone who holds the model on its MB Econic chassis in their hands will suddenly see for themselves: better design, improved functionality – just like the original! The 1:87 model from WIKING combines all of its visual values in an impressive model. The L32 was recently awarded the prize for “Good Design 08“ in the “Product“ category by the German Designer Club (DDC). When developing the product, the designers reconciled the two remits of ergonomics and design. The design focussed on the external visual effect as well as the psychological effect on the parties involved. So the design of the turntable ladder really makes it stand out from other products of this type and also conveys a visual sense of wellbeing on account of its many curves. Driver’s cabin and roof, body construction and ladder carriage in white, front wings as well as apron in white, radiator grille and rotating tower for the turntable ladder in white. Ladder sections and cage in silver grey. Driver’s cab with black window frames and door handles. Rims black. Windscreen wipers, external rear-view mirrors, exhaust, installed supports as well as the three-axle chassis and the generator on the centre support are in black. The interior is basalt grey. Front headlamps are transparent, the indicators are orange transparent and the taillamps red transparent. The two warning lights on the roof are blue transparent. The whole of the driver’s cab and the sides of the body construction are in luminous red (RAL 3026). There is also a yellow warning stripe (RAL 1026) along the sides. The equipment store roller shutters are silver grey on both sides. Driver’s cab doors marked with the name of the Düsseldorf Fire Service as well as warning tape on the Metz ladder cage.
