No sooner had the Golf I started causing a stir on the roads of Germany when the engineers from Ingolstadt proved with the Audi 50 that the compact class can be shrunk even further. 1974 was the year when the Audi 50 introduced the concept of an even more compact front-wheeler that combined a large tailgate with enormous storage space – thanks to rear seats that could be folded down. Golf I and Audi 50 were to accelerate the decline of the legendary Beetle and seal its exit from the automotive world as the advantages of this latest car generation were clear for everyone to see. These benefits alone have earned the Ingolstadt legend a second life as an innovative modern classic in WIKING’s model selection. Engineered in the short span of 21 months, the prototype of the Audi 50 in its day ranked among the vehicles with the shortest development periods. Granted, its counterpart, the Polo, later become the typical “minimalist car” as it sold in much greater numbers, while the production of the Audi 50 ended as early as 1978.
