Not a time of flashy colours, 1946 was a year where dark paintwork dominated the deliveries of the first post-war generation of the VW Beetle. The narrow pretzel window above the bonnet on the rear gave this first Beetle its signature name. While the view through the rear window was severely obstructed for the passengers, the “Pretzel” Beetle wrote the first chapter of an unprecedented success story that ultimately made future series of Beetles synonymous with the mobilisation of Germany.
